Full Description:
[Carleton] to Major-General Baron de Reidesel. New York. In response to Riedesel's request, gave orders some time ago to Major-General Paterson to send at the first opportunity the troops and stores belonging to the Brunswick troops under Captain Clive to Canada; also directed that the Brunswick troops who had made their escape from the enemy and were here should be sent to Halifax to be forwarded at the same time. As the situation has changed entirely and the shortage of transports make it impossible to spare any from here, he is compelled to delay sending the troops, who would probably be brought back immediately. Has directed Major Paterson to send the clothing, camp equipment and other stores of which Riedesel's troops are in great need. Cornet Schonewald who arrived here some time ago with your dispatches, will deliver this letter and has on all occasions shown the greatest anxiety to return to Canada according to his orders but until now has had no opportunity.
