Full Description:
Carleton to Washington. New York. Is with great satisfaction he receives notice of the arrangements for the immediate release of the prisoners. However as he is unable to obtain the necessary tonnage for their evacuation, asks Washington for passports so that they may be marched by land. He cannot decline the personal interview proposed by Washington and proposed being in a frigate near Tappan on 5 May, accompanied by Lieutenant-Governor Elliot, Chief Justice William Smith and part of his family. He also expects Sir Charles Grey, who has been appointed to his command.
