Full Description:
Brigadier-General Alured Clarke, Philadelphia to Carleton relates to the transfer of some 500 British prisoners-of-war [in Pennsylvania] recently released to Philadelphia and thence by road to Elizabethtown. He expects the remaining 1,000 to arrive with him from Lancaster shortly and these will be marched in two batches also to Elizabethtown. Given the large number of British army deserters roaming the countryside he feels they would give themselves up for repatriation if they felt confident they would not be punished harshly. Seeks authority to publish details of an amnesty in this respect. 7677. Major-General Lincoln to Clarke. Regarding the marching of the British prisoners (upwards of 1,000) under the command of Captain Saumarez of the Welsh Fusiliers; the apprehensions of British deserters; and the transportation of the sick by waggon and water.
