Full Description:
Brigadier-General Archibald McArthur, St Augustine to Carleton. Ackowledges receipt of several letters and instructions during January, March and April. Regarding gifts to the Indians, he would prefer to dole these out very carefully in order to avoid ruining the British reputation with them. At all times he will of course avoid improper expenses when dealing with the Indians. He will consult the Governor and Superintendent. He comments that the Indians are agitated at present, as are many Loyalists, as they face their third evacuation. Many have made enemies by their attachment to the British cause. It is essential to maintain good relations. Enclosing a return of receipts, issues and presents remaining in store of each Indian Department, and several instructions relative to the Siminolies [i.e. the Seminoles]. Finally, he expresses thanks for his promotion to the rank of Brigadier-General and hopes to live up to the Commander-in-Chief's expectations.
