Full Description:
M [Mary Willing] Byrd, Westover [Plantation], Virginia to [? Carleton]. Refers to promises made by Lord Cornwallis, General Phillips and General Arnold [in 1781] that she should not suffer any loss by the operations of the British Army and that all of 'her people' [i.e. runaway slaves] should be returned to her after a search of all boats on the [James] river. She has transmitted via Mr Francis a state of her losses.
