Thomas Rawlings. Depositions before David Mathews, Mayor of New York. That on going to Wilmington in his brig 'Jane', he had been ordered out of the State [of Delaware] by the next morning by two magistrates. He proceeded to Philadelphia and on his arrival a summons was brought to him from Jonathan Bayard, Colonel of Militia in that place to appear at the [Pennsylvania] State House. After examination he was ordered to leave that State too, on the grounds that he was an Englishman and 'chused to go where the British colours flew'.
