Full Description:
Henrietta Bruce to Carleton. New York. Apologizes that with the Courts of Justice being stopped, she can receive no remedy except by his interference. That according to enclosure Number 1, she was married in 1778 to Lieutenant-Colonel, now Brigadier-General Bruce. That an order to keep the marriage a secret he always informed her, was dependent upon his father who would disinherit him if he knew and who was advanced in years so could not live long. That she remained with her parents at Rhode Island and that her brother, insisting on the marriage being made public, would not meet her. He did though offer one third of his pay and one half of his commission if he disposed of it. He now refuses to abide by his word and she is unable to obtain any redress from him.
