Full Description:
Adam Graves, John George Graves and Nicholas Andrews to Carleton. New York. Memorial. Their services, losses, imprisonment and sufferings. Were formerly of Washington County, Maryland and all in good circumstances. That in 1781 Adam Graves received a warrant to raise a company; that he appointed his brother John George Graves his first and Nicholas Andrews his second lieutenant and in a short time recruited 132 men; were seized and imprisoned. in irons. Were reprieved on condition of being transported to France, and were sent on board the 'Romulus' in the York River [Virginia], whence they escaped. Following their capture, Adam Graves's estate was confiscated, his family penurious and dependent on their relatives' bounty; that they receive small govenment pensions but these are insufficient in this expensive place. Request a certificate for the truth of the facts, evidence of which they can produce, so that they may have an opportunity of applying in England with some success and some assistance to discharge their debts in this city. On the back is a note for their being paid agreeable to the Refugee list given 2 September 1783.
