Full Description:
Poughkeepsie. Extract from a letter reporting that at a special court a bill of attainder was found against a number of people for their adherence to the British government during the war including Nicholas Hoffman brother of Anthony Hoffman, a member of the court; that Benjamin Lappum, formerly an able Quaker farmer in this county has been sentenced to life imprisonment, loss of estate &c.; that there is undoubtedly a particular group in this county (and likely within the state) promoting measures to intimidate as many Loyalists as they can to leave the country; that the bill of attainder is contrary to the article in the treaty namely that no future confiscation or prosecution shall take place against any person for the part they may have taken in the war; is informed that the majority of the jurors summoned to the court were people that have encouraged and been concerned in the late committee business in this county.
