Full Description:
New York. [Carleton] to Brigadier-General McArthur. New York. Acknowledges receipt of various letters and enclosures. He is to consider the Bahamas under his (McArthur's) command as part of the Southern District until further orders and to give such directions as he may judge prudent. Has heard rumours that the Spanish governor and several others have been detained at [New] Providence by Colonel Deveaux, asks McArthur to make enquiries and report back. He is to order payment of 20/- sterling per day to Colonel Deveaux from the date of his leaving St. Augustine to go against [New] Providence until further orders or he is otherwise provided for unless McArthur should see sufficient reasons for deferring it, which he is to report to Carleton. Has received many applications from Loyalists for land grants in the Bahamas but as he does not know the real state of the islands and what land, if any, remains ungranted asks that McArthur make enquiry so that he can make a decision. An account is to be taken of all military stores to enable him to judge what may be necessary for the future defence of the islands. Has given directions for the replacement of provisions lost in the 'Eliza' and also a further supply for the garrison to the end of the year. The request by the garrison's field officers for forage cannot be granted; no forage or any equivalent is allowed to the field oficers in Nova Scotia nor was it allowed to the officers in Canada during the war. Has directed the department of the Commissary of Provisions here, to be discontinued from 30 June last; he is to do the same in his district.
