Full Description:
John Hamilton Rowland, clerk, to Carleton. Staten Island. Memorial. Early in the war was obliged from principle and necessity to give up his church living in Virginia, worth £200 sterling a year, and with it a property worth £3,000. Has had a chaplaincy in one of Brigadier-General Skinner's battalions and an annual gratuity of £50 sterling from the Treasury; the latter is to be discontinued and some time ago he was reduced to half pay when the regiment was drafted. Only additional support for himself, wife and five children depends on the scanty and very precarious money received for officiating at Richmond church which will end with the evacuation. Asks that, if a garrison is established in any of the Bahamas, he may have the chaplaincy. Annexed are certificates or recommendations from Major Henry Elwes, 19 July; Major G. Nugent and Brigadier-General Bruce, 19 July.
