Full Description:
Colonel G G Ludlow, on behalf of the officers of the British American Regiments, to [Carleton]. New York. Had expected that the memorial by the field officers of the British American regiments presented in March last and forwarded to the King would have been answered before this. They forbear to mention the services of the regiments during the last six years but lament their disbandment without any positive subsistence for the officers or provision for the men equal to that of the Loyalists in general. The officers are now ordered to Nova Scotia then to be disbanded without an assurance of pay. Unaccustomed to labour, deprived of their property in America and having large families, it is absolutely impossible for them to exist in an uncultivated country without immediate govenment assistance. The non-commissioned officers and privates demand particular attention by reason of their faithful service &c. The approach of winter will render them unable to house themselves on the land to be allocated to them and by the time they can start working the land they will have used half the provisions allowed by government. To this must be added they have neither tools, husbandry gear or the ability to buy them. In the circumstances ask that he continues the pay of the different corps until a decisive answer is received for their application for half pay and permanent rank in America; the year's provision to be granted to them to start 1 May next, a period as early as their respective lands can be allotted; and that such tools and husbandry gear be provided as required.
