Full Description:
Camp, Newtown Plains. Detachment of the 71st Regiment to Carleton. Petition. Served under Tarleton of the British Legion. Circumstances of the loss of their knapsacks on an expedition with Cornwallis at Charlotte [North Carolina]; the orders given by Cornwallis for enquiry to be made into each man's loss in order for them to be refunded in full; the mens' capture at [the Battle of] Cowpens which prevented enquiry being made. Presentation of a memorial by the petitioners through their commanding officers but no answer received. Ask that their case be taken under his consideration. Three sergeants and 35 rank and file. 'By My Lord Cornwallis allow 11s 6d sterling for each knapsack and the contents' Signed William Menzies, sergeant 71st Light Infantry. Certificate (with two notes of query on the reverse) by [signature illegible] lieutenant and adjutant
