Full Description:
[Carleton] to Governor Browne. New York. Following the unfortunate loss of Lieutenant Slack and the information he had gathered, is sending to Bermuda the bearer Lieutenant Andrew Durnford, corps of Engineers, to obtain the requisite information. Is sure that Browne will extend the same assistance as he did to Slack. Having received orders for the disbandment of the Royal Garrison Battalion, part of which is at Bermuda, transports will be sent to take them to Nova Scotia; such men as wish to stay in Bermuda will have permission and receive their discharge there. Has no doubt Browne will strengthen arrangements for the future defence of the inhabitants' property and if Carleton can be of service in this regard before he leaves [New York] he will be glad to assist. As he has been informed that Browne declined taking charge of Thomas Poole, who has since made his escape from Carolina, it is not necessary to trouble him further on the subject. P.S. Since writing, Lieutenant Durnford having been taken sick, will go to Bermuda as soon as he is better.
