Full Description:
Carleton to Lieutenant-Colonel [Thomas] Brown. New York. Received on '18th instant' his letter of 20 July. In consequence of his recommendation has directed Brigadier-General McArthur to pay the respective salaries of the extra officers of the Indian Department up to 24 December. As the troops will soon be withdrawn from St Augustine, recommends that these officers to provide without delay for their future maintenance. Should any choose to settle in Nova Scotia or elsewhere in the King's American dominions, they will be recommended for lands as other officers. Thinks he should remain at St Augustine as Superintendent after the troops have left but will be guided by the opinion of Governor Tonyn, supposing he (Brown) has no particular instructions to the contrary from home.
