Full Description:
Mr Coxe. New York. The case of the Widow Barnes. Major Barnes, formerly Sheriff of Hunterdon County, New Jersey joined the British Army at Trenton and as Major of the 3rd Battalion of the New Jersey Volunteers, was killed at Staten Island at the head of his corps in [General John] Sullivan's attack on that post [in 1777]. The estate in 'Jersey' has been confiscated and sold and his widow and daughter obliged about three years ago to come within the British lines. Being obliged to go to Nova Scotia, she requests a recommendation that she may be indulged with a grant of lands equal to the rank of her husband.
