Full Description:
Carleton to Governor Livingston. New York. Cornelius Hetfield has been made acquainted with the charge and proof against him. Regrets that Livingston's opinion does not coincide with his as to the trial of the prisoner at this place and he cannot reconcile himself to the surrender of the prisoner. It is because of the slow abatement of that hostile spriit which it was the intention of the peace articles to subdue, that he prefers the trial here. He must leave the obstinancy of the witnesses who refuse to go to New York, to their discretion. The court will sit from 8-13 September and the witnesses can have no doubt of finding the amplest protection. Encloses affidavits of Smith Hetfield, James Hetfield and Abigail Vergereau.
