Full Description:
John McDonald to Carleton. Petition. He is in the 71st Regiment and is praying to be reimbursed sums spent in assisting prisoners to escape their captivity. Secondly he states that we the subscribers do hereby certify and declare that it consists with our knowledge that the particulars stated in the written petition are true and that the petitioner was more serviceable in effecting the escape of prisoners than any person then with the British Army. Signed by numerous signatories. Also noted on the reverse of the document that Lieutenant-Colonel Gordon will please to say what he knows of this affair, signed by Deputy Adjutant-General Frederick MacKenzie, dated 1 September 1783, followed by Gordon's account.
