Full Description:
Henry Welfling to Carleton. New York. Memorial. That he was obliged to leave his home and possessions in Philadelphia in 1778 and take refuge in New York; is far advanced in age with an aged wife to support; has supported himself and his family without recourse to government help; being almost without money and following the publication of Carleton's letter to General Washington regarding American independence returned to Philadelphia in hope of being allowed to live there; was imprisoned for several weeks and then ordered away by some of the lawless committee there; being now very poor intends to go to 'Abico in the Bahemia' [Abaco in the Bahama] Islands and begs some relief.
