Full Description:
John Mawdesley to Carleton. New York. Was a longstanding reputable and wealthy merchant of Newport, Rhode Island. Gives details of his loyalty and service to the Crown during the war. Having lost all his fortune he was granted the King's bounty of a daily allowance of one dollar from the beginning of 1782. By vote of the General Assembly of Rhode Island is allowed to live with his family till their session in December, when the question of the restitution of his property is to be decided. Expresses his views on republican government. His object is to repossess his property, recover his debts and then move to some place still in allegiance to the King. Declares that he has no means to enable him to effect the move of himself and his family back to Rhode Island but an appeal to Carleton's compassion and charity.
