Full Description:
Cornwallis to Clinton. Yorktown, Virginia. Has received previous letters listed, the enemy fleet has returned, two line of battle ships and one frigate lie at the mouth of this river, and three or four line of battle ships, several frigates and transports went up the bay on the 12th and 14th. Hears that Washington arrived at Williamsburg on 'the 14th'. Some of his troops embarked at the Head of Elk [Elktown, Maryland], and the others arrived at Baltimore on 12 October. The rest of the document is in cypher, discusses having no hopes of relief, provisions lasting six weeks, and Conway being exchanged.
