Anthony Woodward and John Leonard to Carleton. New York. Memorial. Regarding the procurement by them, pursuant to an order dated 14 December 1776, of wagons, horses and provisions for the army under Sir Wiliam Howe and delivered by them to James Christie at Trenton as set out in the accompanying certificate dated Trenton 18 December 1776 signed by James Stockton, one of Christie's clerks; that most of the people from whom the supplies were taken reimbursed themselves out of the memorialists' estates in New Jersey but the remainder, good Loyalists, still look for reimbursement; ask that Carleton order them to pay for the wagons &c as well as indemnify them for their losses so as to enable them to compensate the honest Loyalists to whom they stand accountable. Also a certificate by Lieutenant-Colonel Allen, 2nd battalion New Jersey Volunteers. Endorsed 'Cannot be attended to' by order of the Commander-in-Chief 27 April 1783. The certificate dated 18 December 1776 lists 26 names of wagon owners and the value of the items delivered as £1,558 0s 0d.
