Full Description:
Edmund Kelly to [Carleton]. Baltimore. Memorial. Refers to a petition on behalf of one Jesse Turner previously sent to Carleton; that as he (Kelly) did not regard Turner's imprisonment las egal, the jailer was induced to treat Turner as one of his family rather than a prisoner confined for a large sum of money. Turner was assured by his counsel that he would be released when the court next sat but despite this and his kind treatment, Turner absconded whereby the jailer becomes responsible for an enormous debt. Hopes that Carleton will order Turner to return before the court sits and thereby exonerate a man who will be ruined if the request is denied. Says no injury will be done to the person of Turner nor will he be detained any longer than is necessary to convince the court that the debt claimed is not a legal one. Is confident that Carleton will set an example of justice and propriety of conduct which he is well satisfied will be adopted by the American government towards many other unfortunate refugees, who may fall into their hands and who are now in confinement.
