Full Description:
Captain Donald McPherson, commanding the infantry of the Corps of the British Legion, on behalf of himself and under his command to Carleton. New York. Memorial. That on the formation of the corps by Lord Cathcart in 1778 the men were indiscriminately assigned to the cavalry or infantry at the discretion of the immediate commanding officer; that the infantry when serving with or detached from the cavalry always met with the approbation of several (named) generals; that on 7 March 1781 the officers of the British Legion, in reward for their services, would on the reduction of the corps, be recommended for half pay; that Lord Rawdon had, because of the infantry's good conduct at Hanging Rock in South Carolina, offered them colours and the officers upon the spot medals which were declined by the direction of Lieutenant-Colonel [Banastre] Tarleton; that the infantry consider themselves sharers in the dangers, fatigues and extraordinary exertions of the corps and therefore feel discriminated against by the subsequent order establishing the cavalry only, especially in view of the fact that the infantry of the Queen's Rangers (in similar circumstances) are established. Asks that Carleton takes into consideration their services and make such recommendations to the King as appear proper.
