Full Description:
New York. Mary Clarke, widow, to Carleton. Memorial. Representing the destruction at different times of her estate near Greenwich on this island by the troops, in spite of obtaining an order from the Commandant. In 1781 her house was converted into a barrack for the 42nd Regiment, about 40 soldiers and three officers being quartered there and a great part of the remaining fence destroyed. Is reduced to the necessity of buying fuel after losing what would have been sufficient, with proper economy, to supply herself and her dependents for a great number of years. Prays compensation. Accompanied by the order of Major-General Daniel Jones, commandant of New York, 30 December 1778, retaining for Mrs Clarke's use 40 cords of wood standing on the land, forbidding the cutting down of the fruit trees and the marked trees, which are land marks; also forbidding the damaging or destruction of the fences.
